Logo Design for Dovetail Community Workshop

Was asked to design a logo for this great new company, Dovetail Community Workshop. Their motto: "Do It Yourself doesn't have to mean Do It Alone!" They are a woodworking "makerspace" for carpentry enthusiasts in Albuquerque. They provide workshop space, tools, access to large, typically costly, woodworking machinery, and the opportunity to work with other hobbyists.

They wanted a logo with good weight, that appealed to women without excluding men. Dovetail is, of course, a popular method of joinery. It is also the tail of a dove ;-) Through revisions, we decided that the bird, with emphasis on its tail, was a nice way to appeal to our feminine craftspeople, while highlighting the dovetail as the name of the company. The off-center placement of the bird gives nice movement and energy to their logo, while the supporting text mark, and circular element give the crafty feel.

They liked the idea of a stamp, with plans of turning the logo into an actual wood-burning branding iron to apply to all pieces created at the workshop. What a great idea! Simple two color scheme. Not too girly. We did a business card layout as well.
