I wanted to practice text layout for magazines. I wanted to challenge my editing and layout skills with a real article.

I wanted to practice text layout for magazines. I wanted to challenge my editing and layout skills with a real article. My husband, a gamer and a writer, kindly offered to whip up a couple pretend articles, and describe to me his idea of a "gamer mag". This way I could practice with the constraints a real article would pose versus flowing placeholder text that gives no resistance to your layout or the space you have available, nor the balance between images and copy, etc. (His articles are "Super Mario Galaxy - How much fun is that?!", and the editorial letter for the [rant] column, "Is the Wii Ruining Video Games?") Again, all for fun.

I think magazine layout has to be one of the more challenging disciplines in graphic design. Many constraints, other creative's pieces' (and feelings') considerations, space, copy editing possibly? A long list. A lot of factors to be aware of. But FUN to do!
More magazine/grid layout practice. Photographs' credit goes to my brother-in-law who took these while traveling. I designed an advertisement to add to the layout.
